Active is committed to developing a healthy workplace so employees can thrive and continue to drive performance

(Toronto, ON) March 10, 2020 – Canada’s leading corporate trade company, Active International, has been recognized as an Employee Recommended Workplace for 2020. The initiative presented by Morneau Shepell and The Globe and Mail recognizes Canadian organizations that have succeeded in creating a healthy workplace environment that supports employee well-being.

The Employee Recommended Workplace Award is the only award of its kind that is based entirely on data from employees. Employees are asked to complete a short, anonymous survey that includes questions about their “Total Health” (physical and mental health, as well as work and life). These are all factors that impact employee engagement and productivity. Upon completion, they receive a personal assessment that identifies strengths as well as potential areas for improvement. Organizations receive a summary report that outlines how they score across each health pillar, along with strengths and areas where more work may be needed to improve the health of their workforce.

Companies with high total health scores are representative of healthy spaces in which employees thrive. 2020 marks the third annual instance of the Employee Recommended Workplace Award, and Active International is honoured to receive the designation as one of the top workplaces in the country for a fourth consecutive year.

Wellness Highlights

Active International recognizes wellness from a 360-degree perspective, encompassing physical fitness, nutrition, mental, social, and financial health. A wellness committee was formed two years ago to develop programs to encourage employees to step up their physical activity levels, set personal wellness goals for themselves, and develop healthy habits. This year, an increased focus has been put on personal financial health, and Active has brought in financial coaches to host personal finance sessions for staff members.

“The impact on our staff in such a short time has been incredible,” says Kimberly Presnail, VP Marketing & Culture. “One employee took her first spin class in 2019 and is now in training to be a spin instructor. Another learned a number of vegan recipes and made the decision to become vegan. When employees feel supported in reaching their personal goals, they can achieve amazing things. They bring this energy and motivation to the workplace which turns into high performance and business growth for the company.”

Benefits Highlights

Active offers a variety of Health and Wellness benefits for employees to take advantage of, including a comprehensive medical and dental benefits plan; on-site massages; healthcare spending accounts; a sabbatical policy; and extended health benefits (i.e. naturopath, nutritionist, therapy, etc.). Active also offers reimbursements for gym memberships, fitness classes, or Fitbit devices. Providing access to these benefits is important so employees can holistically mitigate health concerns and prevent future issues.

Beyond this, some of the other benefits employees receive at Active include getting a day off for their birthday, an RRSP program with contribution matching, fitness subsidies, charitable contribution matching, healthy snacks in meeting rooms, flexible work hours, and work from home options. These perks all contribute to a healthy work/life balance, and they have a positive impact on the mental health and well-being of staff members.

Training and Development

Active International is committed to training and developing its employees so they can stay ahead of the curve. Employees from all levels of the organization are encouraged to attend company-funded conferences and industry events to keep up with trends. Additionally, an online training portal, the Ad Learning Exchange (known as ALEX) is available to employees to foster professional growth and individual development in the advertising and media industry. Finally, an internal Job Shadowing program allows employees to learn the role of a team member from another department, promoting personal development and improving internal communication in the organization. Allowing employees to develop their skillsets reinforces Active’s high-performing culture and maintains high employee retention (50% of staff members have been with the company for over 5 years).

Industry Recognition

Externally, Active International has received recognition from a number of other programs, including the Canada’s Most Admired Corporate Cultures Award, Great Place To Work Canada Certification, Best Workplaces Places for Millennials List, and recently scoring an impressive 92% on the Great Place to Work Trust index score.

In addition to participating in these initiatives, Active International deployed the Waterstone ENGAGE Survey in 2019, and received an eNPS of 68 from its employees (benchmark scores are 10-30 for an average company and scores of 50 or greater are considered high).
